The K53 explained

How the K53 test works

K53 is the official method used across South Africa for both the learner's and driving licence tests. Here's the plain-English version.

Step 1 — Your learner's licence

Before you can drive on public roads, you need a learner's licence. The test is written or computer-based at a licensing centre (DLTC) and covers three areas:

  • Road signs — recognising signs, signals and road markings
  • Rules of the road — the laws that keep everyone safe
  • Vehicle controls — knowing what each control does

For a Code 8 (car) learner's licence you must be at least 17 years old. We'll make sure you walk in prepared.

A learner's licence is valid for 24 months — plenty of time to get your driving lessons in and book your test.

We practise each one until it's second nature — so the yard test feels routine, not scary.

Step 2 — Your driving test (K53)

The driving test has two parts. First the yard test, where you perform set manoeuvres, typically including:

  • Pre-trip vehicle inspection
  • Incline (hill) start without rolling back
  • Alley docking
  • Parallel parking
  • Three-point turn / turn in the road

Then the road test: driving in real traffic while the examiner checks your observation, control and decision-making. We coach you on both.

How many lessons will I need?
It depends on your experience and confidence. After a first assessment lesson, Maria will give you an honest idea of how many lessons you'll need to be test-ready.
Do you teach in a manual or automatic car?
Lessons are in a manual vehicle (Code 8), so you'll be fully confident with clutch and gears — the licence most learners want.
How much are lessons and how do I pay?
Lessons are R360 each, payable in advance. Get in touch and we'll help you plan how many you'll need.
Can you help me book my test?
We'll guide you on how and where to book your learner's and driving tests at your nearest licensing centre, and make sure you're properly prepared beforehand.
Where do lessons take place?
Lessons are offered in and around Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). Get in touch to arrange a convenient pick-up point.
